Japanese Modernism Class. The professor scanned a pages from a 1931 manga dictionary. We then had to strain our eyes to count stroke order on blurred minute characters, then translate. Needless to say, it was like hell.
リヴァイヴァル 「蘇生」又は「復活」と訳する。この世へリヴァイヴァルするなら善いけれど、「天国へ・・・」なんて云うのは有り難く無い。コースを間違えて成らぬものは、単り競争ばかりではない。
Revival: It’s the translation for the Japanese terms X and Y. Revival in this world is fine, but you won’t appreciate this if it means you wake up dead “in paradise.” It’s not only a short sprint where you should make sure you’re going in the right direction!
リヴォルヴァ 「単発拳銃」のことだ。「リヴォルヴァを携えた怪漢」など、よく探偵小説に出て来る語である
Revolver: translated as [tanbatsukenjuu] (single barrel gun). [A suspicious fellow carrying a gun in his hand] such are the words often seen in detective stories.
Liqueur : In "mixed liqueur" konseishu (alcohol mixed with sugar, fruit, spicess, etc.) adds fragrance and color, and is mainly drunk after meals as a digestive aid and it serves as a kind breath freshener. The most well known liqueurs are: marachino, curacao, cognac, peppermint, chateau rius, adoboado, and vermouth. The song Tokyo March said to be "Dance to the jazz and get lost in/get carried with liqueur," but nowadays it like "I can’t even dance, I can’t even drink, morning comes and all I have is this pathetic little salary.”Ah, it’s a stingy, harsh world.
Recital : It was said that many performers would compete in a kind of concertal face-off. Meaning "dokushoukai" (voice recitals) or "dokusoukai
(solo recitals) where the performer does all the musical selections alone. At times, the contents (not any new scores?)[Literally, this is it, but can you think of something more natural in English than contents?] of the musical society do not progress and develop, and recitals are not held, but it seems recently music has begun developing further and performers frequently hold recitals to display their artistic accomplishments. However, among these musicians who hold demonstrations because they have ambitions to join the musical world, they hold these bogus recitals in attempt to impress society—they are quite determined and there are more than a few of them.. Recitals held by two or more people are considered 'joint recitals'. A good example of such is Ms. Sachiko Ando and Mr. Shirota's recitals.
リスト 「目録」又は「名簿一覧表」のこと。これの代表的なものと云えば誰しもブラック・リストに指を屈するであろう
List: Translated as "mokuroku" (catalog, list) or "meibaichiranhyou" (register of names). If this is mentioned, ,typically everyone's finger points to the black list.
